With light winds Saturday morning, I was out early to look and listen for anything calling in the dark. As it got light, I had brief views of a Long eared Owl. Also noted were 16 Greylag Geese, 1 Grey Partridge, 1 Lapwing and 9 Skylark. I spent most of my time in the Bishopstone area where I had a good look and listen for a Yellow browed Warbler in the Glen but no luck as of yet. No doubt they will appear when I'm at work! There were 1 Mallard, 1 Pheasant, 1 Stock Dove, 85 Woodpigeon, 9 Oystercatcher, 1 Ringed Plover, 1 Redshank, 1 Mediterranean Gull, 1 Great Black backed Gull, 2 Sandwich Tern, 13 Cormorant, 1 Little Egret, 2 Grey Heron, 1 Sparrowhawk, 1 Marsh Harrier out to sea, 1 Great spotted Woodpecker, 1 Kestrel, 1 Jay, 1 Sand Martin, 169 Swallow, 5 House Martin, 5 Chiffchaff, 3 Cetti's Warbler, 2 Blackcap, 1 Lesser Whitethroat, 2 Goldcrest, 1 Firecrest, 2 Grey Wagtail, 1 Meadow Pipit, 8 Chaffinch and 8 Linnet. Nocmig recording Friday night produced 1 Tawny Owl (148) distantly calling in the early hours.
Having recorded the Tawny Owl Friday night, I was keen to get out early to see whether I could hear it calling. After a while of listening into the darkness, I heard the Tawny Owl a couple of times before all went quiet. Although the bird is outside of the patch boundary, I am happy to count it as I heard it within the patch boundary. Anyway, a new bird for the patch for me as was the Coot I could also hear calling in the dark. I spent a few hours walking around the area until 10:15am and noted 1 Long eared Owl seen well perched. As it turned it's head, I could make out the flattened long ear tufts. This was I expect the same bird I reported as a Short eared a few weeks ago. Also seen were 10 Grey Partridge, 1 Oystercatcher, 2 Curlew, 2 Turnstone, 1 Sanderling, 44 Black headed Gull, 1 Great Black backed Gull, 11 Sandwich Tern, 2 Gannet, 25 Cormorant, 1 Little Egret, 1 Grey Heron, 1 Sparrowhawk, 1 Great spotted Woodpecker, 1 Green Woodpecker, 1 Ring necked Parakeet, 13 Skylark, 45 Swallow, 8 House Martin, 5 Chiffchaff, 1 Cetti's Warbler, 2 Blackcap, 1 Whitethroat, 3 Goldcrest, 1 Firecrest, 2 Grey Wagtail, 4 Meadow Pipit, 2 Rock Pipit, 24 Chaffinch, 14 Linnet, 1 Goldfinch and 10 Siskin. Nocmig recording Saturday night produced 1 Tawny Owl distantly calling again and 2 Grey Partridge early morning.
